Summary
The Paraprofessional, performs a variety of non-teaching classroom support and student personal care services as directed under the supervision of an assigned teacher or assistant principal. Paraprofessionals work independently in the Teacher’s absence. The paraprofessional supports a warm, nurturing, safe and loving environment which is educationally sound in developmental practices.
This position reports directly to the Classroom Teacher and Assistant Principal.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associates Degree, High School Diploma, Paraprofessional Aide Permit
- Highly desired Registered Behavior Technician.
- Self-directed and able to learn required skills for the position.
- Willingness to assist with diapering, self-care, feeding, behavior needs and/or basic academic tasks.
- Ability to assist students with developmental delays including but not limited to, G-Tube support, seizures, diabetes, communicative behaviors, diapering, toilet-support, etc.
- Displays flexibility, reliability, self-discipline and a willingness to take on challenging tasks.
- Effective communication, problem-solving and time management skills.
- Embodies high ethical standards/integrity. Accepts responsibility for personal decisions/conduct.
- Maintains a record free of criminal violations that would prohibit non-public charter school employment.
- Participate (and pass where applicable) in all required training, including but not limited to: Blood-borne Pathogens, AEGIS De-escalation Trained, Educator Ethics, etc.
- Adhere to The Golden Key Center for Exceptional Children’s Board of Director’s policies/administrative guidelines/staff handbook, policies of the assigned district/worksite, and the to the Ethics Code of Conduct.
Essential Functions
- Maintain a demonstrated philosophy that all students can and will learn.
- Checks with assign staff for instructions. Works with small groups and/or individual
- students. Seeks advice when expectations are unclear.
- Helps students with remedial and/or enrichment activities. Reinforces instructional objectives introduced by the teacher. Maintains a positive learning environment.
- Offers help when students ask or their behavior suggests they need assistance. Avoids
- being intrusive. Solves student concerns discreetly.
- Works with appropriate staff on gathering and preparing materials and maintaining required documents.
- Follows prescribed medical plans and/or assists students with personal hygiene care as trained by a licensed professional.
- Follows The Golden Key’s feeding protocols and philosophy.
- Respects personal privacy. Maintains the confidentiality of privileged information.
- Takes precautions to ensure staff/student safety. Does not leave students unsupervised.
- Watches for student behavior that may indicate a problem (e.g., profanity, teasing, bullying, distress, etc.). Intervenes and/or reports concerns to an administrator.
- Maintains high standards and upholds the student conduct code.
- Participates in implementation of individual education plans.
- Effectively follows outlined behavior plans.
- Perform other specific duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- A minimum of an Associate’s Degree, High School Diploma.
- Highly Desired and recommended Registered Behavior Technician (RBT).
- Experience with Special Needs Students in an educational setting
- Current Educational Aide Permit with Ohio Department of Education & Workforce, or current qualifications to apply

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Additional Physical Demands: Staff may be subject to injury such as, bites, kicks, smacks, spit, hits and other physical touches as a result of a student's behavior.
