Job Description

THE THEODORE ROOSEVELT PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY FOUNDATION

“Believe you can, and you’re halfway there.” -Theodore Roosevelt

Since 2014, the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation (TRPLF) has been planning and building a new, ambitious kind of presidential library and museum. Other presidential libraries tell the story of a single individual, but the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library (TRPL) – being built more than a century after T.R.’s death – will do more than preserve history. The TRPL will be a people’s library, bringing Roosevelt’s values and relentless spirit to life at a critical time in our nation and world, while simultaneously championing the stories of all who “dare greatly, think boldly, care deeply, and live passionately.”

The library is currently being constructed in Medora, North Dakota, with a milestone planned for July 4, 2026 – America’s 250th anniversary. Participants at the TRPL will learn from – not just about – Roosevelt’s story, being transformed into the same stunning Badlands that served as the fulcrum in T.R.’s incredible life story.

Guided by the pillar principles of leadership, citizenship, and conservation, the Foundation has partnered with innovative partners – like the award-winning architecture firm, Snøhetta, and the best-in-class story crafters, the Future of Storytelling – to build an institution like no other. With plans to be the most sustainable presidential library and campus ever, a revolutionary approach to interpretive design, and programming that will spread the library’s message into neighboring Theodore Roosevelt National Park and beyond across the globe, the opportunity to join a talented team in building and opening this institution is truly unique.

About the Role

The Director of Events and Protocol is responsible for designing, planning, and executing extraordinary events that advance the mission and visibility of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. This includes signature programs at the Library in Medora as well as high-profile events across the country.

This role also serves as the Library’s protocol expert, ensuring dignitaries, government officials, and high-profile guests are welcomed and hosted with the highest levels of professionalism, cultural sensitivity, and ceremonial precision.

This role requires equal parts strategist and operator—someone who can envision memorable experiences and then deliver them with precision. From convenings of thought leaders and national partners to donor gatherings, milestone celebrations, and official ceremonies, the Director ensures every event reflects the Library’s values, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence.

The position oversees the full lifecycle of events, including strategy, protocol planning, logistics, vendor management, guest experience, and post-event evaluation. The Director works closely with senior leadership, Development, Communications, and cross-functional teams to create seamless, inspiring experiences for participants.

Core Competencies

  • Business acumen with strategic pricing, budgeting, and sponsorship development.
  • Emotional intelligence, cultural awareness, and strong interpersonal skills—comfortable with high-profile audiences and collaborators.
  • Inspirational leadership that cultivates professional, inclusive, mission-aligned teams.
  • Strategic planner with the ability to manage complex logistics, timelines, and evolving expectations.
  • Resilient under pressure; diplomatic and adaptable through change and ambiguity.
  • Skilled communicator—clear, empathetic, and always mission-focused.
  • Deep knowledge of protocol, diplomacy, and ceremonial practices for hosting heads of state, dignitaries, and high-profile individuals.
  • Strong judgment and discretion when handling confidential or sensitive information.
  • Ability to balance ceremonial tradition with innovative event design, ensuring experiences are both meaningful and distinctive.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning and execution of all TRPL events, with the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora as the cornerstone, while extending the Library’s presence through thoughtfully executed programs in major markets nationwide.
  • Own the event lifecycle: ideation, budgeting, pricing strategy, vendor coordination, execution, and evaluation.
  • Serve as the Library’s protocol advisor, guiding leadership and staff on precedence, official etiquette, and ceremonial standards.
  • Develop and maintain protocol manuals, briefing documents, and hosting guidelines for all TRPL events and visits.
  • Partner with Development and Communications to ensure events serve fundraising, stewardship, and brand objectives.
  • Partner with Finance to develop and manage event budgets, pricing strategies, and sponsorship opportunities to maximize impact and financial sustainability.
  • Negotiate vendor contracts and manage service delivery within financial and quality standards.
  • Lead and inspire staff, cross-departmental teams, and contractors to deliver mission-aligned experiences.
  • Collaborate with Facilities, Protective Services, and Operations to integrate safety, accessibility, and stewardship—implicitly supporting the Library’s environmental and civic mission.
  • Oversee logistics and guest management for diplomatic, governmental, and international delegations.
  • Advise the CEO, Board, and senior leadership on protocol matters for high-level donor, government, and partner engagements.
  • Ensure that all aspects of guest experience—from invitations to arrival ceremonies to gift exchanges—adhere to appropriate protocol and cultural standards.
  • Represent TRPLF at national planning meetings, site visits, and protocol-related partner engagements.
  • Collect, analyze, and report event data, including outcomes, guest feedback, and ROI, to inform ongoing strategy and improvement.

Experience & Education

Required

  • 7+ years leading large-scale, multi-stakeholder events with tight standards and business-aligned goals.
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial planning (budgeting, pricing, sponsorship).

  • Proven ability to lead diverse teams and collaborate across departments.
  • Experience in cultural institutions, nonprofits, or mission-driven environments.
  • Familiarity with donor and partner engagement through events.
  • Knowledge of security and protocol standards for high-profile gatherings.
  • Proficiency in event planning tools, project management software, and CRM systems.
  • Direct experience in protocol, diplomacy, government relations, or executive hosting.
  • Training in protocol, etiquette, or diplomatic affairs (e.g., Foreign Service Institute, Protocol School of Washington, or equivalent).
  • Experience managing high-stakes visits involving heads of state, government officials, or major donors.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; must be able to move throughout the facility and visitor areas.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds and assist with all guest service tasks.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.
  • This is a full-time, exempt position, working onsite at TRPL, located in Medora, ND.
  • Must reside within a reasonable distance of Medora, ND (within 60 miles or less than a one-hour drive).

Benefits

Full benefits include 403(b), medical insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability, as well as 20 days of paid time off and 10 days of holidays. The annual salary ranges between $100,000 to $125,000 commensurate with experience.
